Mayor’s Community Awards – Local winners

At Winchester Guildhall yesterday evening, two local heroes were among those who received awards for outstanding voluntary service from Winchester Mayor, Councillor Eileen Berry.
The Mayor’s Community Awards celebrate the selfless activity that goes on in every part of local society and makes the District a truly wonderful place to live.

Sue Down – chair of the Compton Tenants’ Association
Sue Down is dedicated to her community. She is chair of the Compton Tenants Association and an active member of WCC’s Tenants and Councils Together committee. Other voluntary work includes: coordinating event bookings and maintenance of the scout hall; organising the weekly over 50s keep fit sessions and the annual children’s Easter egg hunt. She also provides local support to the WCC annual 10-16 years old coaching and football tournament (won by Compton in 2014).

Mike Allerton – Over 40 years of dedicated voluntary service to Compton F C
From Groundsman to Referee, from Secretary to Treasurer to Cleaner and Barman – Michael has done all of these jobs for the benefit of all who have played for the club. Through all weathers and football’s ups and downs he has been a constant figure working tirelessly to improve facilities and encourage all age groups to enjoy their sport.
