M3 J9-14 Smart Motorway upgrade
Overnight Working
Work to improve journeys by upgrading the M3 motorway is anticipated to start later this year. Highways England will be installing narrow lanes in both directions between junction 9 at Winchester and junction 14 at Eastleigh, and the hard shoulder will be used as a running lane. This will provide a safe working area in the central reservation, whilst keeping three lanes open during the daytime.
To prepare the hard shoulder for this, enabling work will continue under overnight lane closures with some planned carriageway and/or slip road closures. All traffic management for full overnight carriageway and/or slip road closures will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am.
No overnight slip road closures are planned for the week beginning 19 July 2021.
Contractors’ Compound
As reported in M3 Contractor Compound, a field adjacent to Badger Farm Road is to be used as a Contractors’ Compound while the Smart Motorway work is going on.
The first step was to do an archaeological survey to make sure that the goundworks would not disturb anything significant.
The survey is now complete and, as expected, there were no significant finds.
The checks uncovered either native chalk or chalk which was placed there during the original construction of the M3 motorway through Twyford Down in the early 1990s.
We will probably see work starting later this summer.
