New Pavilion Press Release

PRESS RELEASE issued 25th Feb 2003

ALMOST A QUARTER OF A MILLION POUNDS COMES TO COMPTON & SHAWFORD !!!

For almost twenty years there have been efforts to replace the old pavilion buildings at the Memorial Playing Fields in Shepherds Lane, Compton.

Now, with the assistance of the Sport England Lottery Fund, these plans will become a reality this year.

The new £400,000 pavilion will be built thanks to an award of £246,025 from Sport England, funding of £100,000 from Compton and Shawford Parish Council, and with £10000 from Winchester City Council Open Spaces Fund, £1800 from the Hampshire Playing Fields Association, £20000 from the Compton & Shawford Sports Club as well as £21000 from local fundraising activity.

Mr George Beckett, Chairman of the Parish Council commented “I am delighted at the news of the Sport England support for our new pavilion project. So many local people have worked hard for so long towards these new facilities, it is now wonderful to know that their work will now bear fruit”

Paul Murray, Chairman of the Pavilion Building Committee, commented that all the long suffering footballers, cricketers and tennis players, who have had to use the old facilities, would hear the news with great delight. He said that the new pavilion will greatly enhance the provision of sport in the local area.

Building work will commence in the spring, with completion planned before the end of the year.
