Hockley Viaduct Future

Dear Gp Capt Dawson,

SHAWFORD VIADUCT
The Parish Footpath Representative attended a meeting in late November at the City Offices on the topic of the future of Shawford Viaduct. That the fine late Victorian Itchen Valley feature has a future at all is thanks to the former efforts of the Winchester Preservation Trust, which managed a few years ago to dissuade the County Council from having the bridge blown up. The ambition now is to have the viaduct restored to its former glory, to be used as a cycle and footpath serving the new residential areas, and as a point from which to view the valley. Restoration will need some public money, and that will be much more readily available if the edifice can be officially listed Grade 2.

The Winchester Preservation Trust has some excellent grounds for such a listing, for Environmental, Technical, and Historical reasons. If you would like to support the Preservation Trust in its application (the Compton & Shawford and Twyford Parish Councils are favourable to the idea) please contact the Trust’s Chris Webb, Chernoke Place, 35 Southgate Street, Winchester SO23 9EH (tel: 852015) and offer your support. Such assistance in an excellent environmental cause will be both useful and appreciated.

TOM THRELFALL
PARISH FOOTPATH REPRESENTATIVE
