June 1999 PC Meeting Report

The monthly meeting of the Parish Council was held on 1 June with Mr NJ Campbell-White in the Chair.

Sightline junction Compton Street-Otterbourne Road.

Reported that thanks had been expressed to Mrs Schofield, owner of the property, for her prompt attention to cutting back the overgrowth.

Parking on the road at Shawford.

Following complaints regarding the dangers from traffic and parking on Shawford Road, to which there seems no solution , the matter is to be referred back to Shawford Village Residents’ Association for their representations to the Parish Council

Waste injection into farmland.

City Cllr Mrs Campbell-White reported that a licence had been granted, subject to periodic review, for spoil to be injected into land close to houses and which emitted a strong stench on occasions. Enquiries are to be made as to what exactly is injected, what kind of chemicals are included and why spoil is permitted to be injected into land close to houses.

Provision of speed humps on Compton Street.

A report is to be made by Cllr Wilmshurst following a meeting to be held of residents to consider the matter.

Parish Millennium Celebrations.

Meetings continue and efforts are being made to get more people involved.

Planning.

Permission granted for a detached dwelling on land adj Ty-Gwyn, Southdown Road, and the following two applications have been withdrawn: Extensions, triple garage with games room above and conservatory at Cornersway, Southdown Road ; Annexe to existing house, 3 no. stables and garage, at Meadow Barn, Shepherds Lane.

Overgrown grass

around the seats at the Memorial Playing Field and on the bank opposite the school, Compton Street, is to be investigated for appropriate action.

New pavilion.

Following the decision to implement the motion carried at The Annual Parish Meeting to hold a referendum asking parishioners to vote on the Parish Council proposals for a new pavilion as regards size, funding, position and design, an approach has been made to WCC who have agreed to supervise the referendum and arrange an independent count. Voting papers will be posted to all registered electors in mid June. The voting papers should be sent back to the City Council in the envelopes provided, for verification and counting. (Note: after consultation with the City Council following the Parish Council meeting, the latest date for voting slips to be received by the City Council was set for July 5th. The votes will be counted on July 6th).

Street lighting.

A submission has been sent to the County Surveyor, proposing that lighting be provided to the island refuge on Otterbourne Road, opposite Compton Street entrance, and to facilitate safety for pedestrians crossing to and from the southbound and northbound adjacent bus shelters.

Street name signs.

Following representations a letter has been sent to the Chief Engineer, WCC, asking for the supply and erection of name plates, in appropriate positions, for the following: Old Shepherds Lane (loop road off Shepherds Lane); Pearson Lane (the crescent road off Shawford Road and opposite Station Yard and passing the Shawford Parish Hall) ; Hunts Lane (the road at the side of The Bridge Inn and between the railway line)
